GIA - Certificate

"The left side shows the old certificate format, and the right side shows the new version. The two differ in layout and color scheme, while the content remains largely the same."

GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America, which was founded by Robert M. Shipley in 1931 in Los Angeles, USA. GIA pioneered the internationally recognized 4Cs diamond grading system—Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight—a standard that unified the global evaluation of diamond quality. As a non-profit organization, GIA prioritizes integrity and objectivity, ensuring that its grading results are not influenced by external factors, which gives it a high level of credibility worldwide.

So, what exactly is written on a GIA certificate?
Let’s take a closer look and break it down in detail today.

  • GIA Logo

  • GIA Report Number (The report number should match the laser inscription on the diamond’s girdle)

  1. March 10, 2016: Date the report was issued

  2. GIA Report Number: The unique identification number of the certificate

  3. Shape and Cutting Style: The shape and cutting style of the diamond

“Brilliant” refers to the brilliant cut, and “round” means the round shape.
Other diamond shapes each have their own specific names.

  1. Measurements: Diamond dimensions

The measurements are given as minimum–maximum diameter × height, in millimeters.
The diameter is often shown as a range due to slight natural variations.

To put it simply:
This part tells you the actual physical size of the diamond.

这部分的内容就是我们常说的4C

  1. Carat Weight: The weight of the diamond

Carat is the unit of weight used for diamonds.

  • 1 gram = 5 carats

  • 1 carat = 100 points

  1. Color Grade: The color of the diamond

Gem-quality white diamonds are graded from D to Z.

The scale starts at D, which stands for Diamond and represents the whitest and most valuable color.
As you move down the scale toward Z, the diamond shows increasing yellow or brown tint, and its value gradually decreases.

  1. Clarity Grade: The clarity of the diamond

This refers to the number and size of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface blemishes visible under 10× magnification.
The further you move down the clarity scale, the lower the clarity and the more inclusions the diamond has.

The VS1–VS2 clarity range offers the best value for everyday wear—very clean to the naked eye and reasonably priced.
For collecting or investment, IF (Internally Flawless) is more suitable.
If you're buying a diamond just for casual or occasional wear, SI can be acceptable.
However, grades below SI are generally not recommended.

  1. Cut Grade: The cut quality of the diamond

This is primarily evaluated based on three factors:

  • Polish

  • Proportions

  • Symmetry

Cut is extremely important for a diamond, as it directly affects its brilliance and sparkle.

Even a diamond with the best color and clarity can appear dull and lifeless if the cut is poor.

Cut grades are classified as:

  • EXCELLENT (EX)

  • VERY GOOD (VG)

  • GOOD (G)

  • FAIR

From the sample certificate we’re referencing, the diamond is:

  • 0.60 carats

  • Color grade: F

  • Clarity grade: VVS1

  • Cut grade: Excellent (EX)

This section provides detailed supplements to the previously mentioned 4Cs.

  1. Polish: The surface finish of the diamond

Polish enhances a diamond’s brightness and shine.
After cutting, a diamond must be polished to make its surface smooth and reflective.
Well-polished diamonds appear brighter and allow light to reflect more effectively, contributing to a stronger sparkle.

  1. Symmetry: The alignment and balance of the diamond's facets

Symmetry refers to how evenly and precisely the diamond has been cut on both sides.
Since every diamond has natural variations in diameter, no diamond is perfectly symmetrical, but better symmetry results in better light performance and overall beauty.

  1. Fluorescence: The diamond’s reaction to ultraviolet (UV) light

Fluorescence refers to the visible colored glow—usually blue or sometimes yellow—that a diamond emits when exposed to strong UV light.

It is graded by intensity into five levels:

  • NONE

  • FAINT

  • MEDIUM

  • STRONG

  • VERY STRONG

Fluorescence is typically not visible under natural daylight and usually does not affect the diamond’s appearance.

  1. Clarity Characteristics: Inclusions

These are internal features found in natural diamonds, visible only under a microscope, and serve as evidence of the diamond’s natural origin.
They act as a supplement to the clarity grade, providing more specific information.

Common types include:

  • Pinpoint

  • Cloud

  • Needle

These inclusions are typically not visible to the naked eye.

(Not visible to the naked eye)

For example, the diamond in the certificate has:

  • Excellent (EX) Polish

  • Excellent (EX) Symmetry

  • Under a microscope, a few pinpoints and needles can be observed.

This section shows the proportion diagram of the diamond.

The accuracy of the diamond's proportions determines how well it reflects and refracts light, which directly affects whether the diamond displays fire and brilliance.
Therefore, proportion is one of the most important factors in evaluating a diamond’s overall quality.

This section primarily lists the grading scales for Clarity, Cut, and Color, which are part of the 4Cs.
